Preview uses pinned headlines first, then fills remaining slots from your filled headlines in order.
Add at least 10 headlines and 3 descriptions with varied wording to improve performance.
Use all 15 headline slots. More headlines give Google a bigger combination pool to test. Aim for at least 10, but 15 is the target. Each one should say something different about your offer.
Write headlines from different angles: benefit, feature, urgency, social proof, and price. Avoid starting 3 or more headlines with the same word. Google rewards variety with a higher ad strength score.
Descriptions give you up to 90 characters each to expand on your offer. Write 4 distinct ones. Do not repeat the same value proposition across all 4. Use different call-to-action phrases in each.
Pinning locks a headline into a position and reduces Google's ability to test combinations. Only pin when legally or brand-required. If you do pin, add multiple headlines to the same position so Google can still test within that slot.
A Responsive Search Ad can have up to 15 headlines. Google will automatically test different combinations and show up to 3 headlines at a time in your ad. The more unique headlines you provide, the more combinations Google can test to find what performs best.
Each RSA headline has a 30-character limit. Descriptions have a 90-character limit each. These limits ensure your ads display cleanly across all devices and placements. Special characters and spaces both count toward the limit.
A good RSA strength rating comes from filling at least 10 headlines (15 is best), writing 3 to 4 descriptions, and making sure your headlines say different things. Google penalizes repetitive messaging. Aim for Excellent by maxing out all fields with varied, keyword-relevant copy.
Pinning headlines limits the combinations Google can test, which typically hurts performance. Only pin when absolutely necessary, such as for legal disclaimers or strict brand requirements. If you must pin, assign 2 to 3 headlines to the same position so Google can still test within that slot.
